Larestan is located in the south of Iran, in the pivot of shiraz- Bandar Abbas, and is known as one of the divisions of the tropical area of Fars province.
Ebnbalkhi, 5th century's historian and geography writer has written in his book, Farsnameh, as an explanation and description about this extensive province: "It's completely located in desert with a tropical climate and each village is surrounded by the fences."
From ancient times, the people were busied by crafting and trading in addition to agriculture. Because Larestan is located in the middle of a main commercial road that reaches to the Persian Gulf's Harbors. And in the Middle Age Lar had been a commercial city. The majority of the residents contain of Lari-speaker Iranians but some minorities such as Kurds, Balouchs, Arabs, Turkish speakers Ghashghayee, and Jewish had been dwelling here.
Larestan, now so silent and unknown, had been a well-known territory in past and its fire temple, Azar Faranbagh in Karian, which nowadays is only a ruined place, had been famous once.
Concerning philology, "Lari" language is a distinct and completely independent member of the languages and dialects group in the south-west of Iran. But the lack of some important criteria such as alphabet, literal traditions and also lack of additional standards of philology like using the language in the educational and administrative systems don't allow us to call Lari a language for sure.
The Municipality and Islamic council of the historic city of Lar with the cooperation of Iranian scientific and investigation centers consider it as their own responsibility to design an execute the International Conference of Larestan Philology and Ethnology in order to investigate and survey about Lari’s language and culture.
Article presentation and the presence of scholars, philologists, and Iran anthropologist can be a great way for revealing the scientific secrets of the mystery of the permanence of the culture, identity and the language of this great southern territory.
